We attempted to go antiquing, but ended up heavily discussing the random knick knacks we found instead of seriously searching. Thrifting and antiquing is definitely a solitary activity. And we found out Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring is being released at the Art theater on RR that puts on Rocky Horror!!! We headed down the street, where she suggested this hole-in-the-wall burger joint with the best fries in town. Across the street was a boutique that sold adorable clothing and accessories, but they offered a really great selection of candles. After a ridiculously long amount of time, I settled on an amazing albeit overpriced sugar cane-vanilla orchid scent.<br/><br/> I headed off to my local Red Cross Chapter from four until eight in the evening. Giving back to my community is a major goal of mine this summer and I am ecstatic that I made progress today. I find that I meet the greatest people when I am involved in philanthropic activities and today was no exception. I met a girl who attends another high school in my district. We were pleased to realize we have numerous mutual friends and we hit it off from the start. I am so excited to get to work with her this summer. We signed up to volunteer at an all-women&#8217;s veteran stand down together, so that will be fun. My parents and I had Lebanese cuisine for dinner, where I took this photo of the restaurant’s amazing decor. I am constantly on the lookout for inspiration for my next bedroom improvement project and I have to say, I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. Next time, I must ask how they painted the walls. We stopped by an ice cream parlor for dessert. Instinctively, I woke up at six this morning, but I went back to sleep and got up again at 1:30 P.M. Whoops! Anyway, I was famished, so I headed off to try a Mexican restaurant in one of my favorite areas in my city. There are really great antique shops along the street that I enjoy strolling around in. I took this photo in one of the wonderfully curated stores because it really reminded me of a scene in the I-Spy books I religiously scoured when I was young. The rest of my day was equally fun; I helped a friend ask her boyfriend to Disneyland and I had more Mexican food. I said it was petroleum products. He said it was, in fact, cocoa. I expressed my bewilderment at this newfound information (how does one of Africa’s top economies fund itself with primarily cocoa exports???), he shook his head in a knowing manner, and I felt disoriented for the remainder of the presentation. The ordeal was quite embarrassing for me, so I finally looked it up. Petroleum products constitute 70 percent of their exports! They are one of the top oil producing countries in Africa! They are a member of OPEC!!! How could I let myself be schooled incorrectly on a subject I knew? I am too easily intimidated by age and authority. (I discussed it with my parents. (don’t hate me, but the experience is going well so far!) It’s a quick read, but powerful and quite fitting for this period in my life. I actually read the story a few weeks prior, but I hesitated to review it. A few weeks prior to AP testing season, I wanted a break from studying— something new to lift me out of the lull in my inspiration. My favorite haunt is a five-minute’s drive from my school and I constantly fall in love with the new places I discover around the same area. (We came to the conclusion that this album does not provide appropriate hanging-out-with-friends background music.) I really enjoy “Hoarfrost” and “Hits of Sunshine (For Allen Ginsberg).” </span><span>Sonic Youth has a tendency to bring out my inner angsty teen.</span><span> </span></p> <p><span><strong>Relationships</strong></span></p> <p>This past week has truly exemplified the importance of maintaining relationships with the people I meet. In the span of three days, I tied in an election, lost one, and then won another. Reflecting back, the tie meant more than the rest. (But I was floored by the support I was given in each of these elections.) Afterschool on the day of the tie, a girl from my eighth-grade Physical Education class came up to me to tell me she voted for me. It is difficult for me to grasp the idea that if she had chosen not to vote, the results could have been skewed in my opponent’s favor. If someone else forgot to vote, if one of my amazing campaigner-friends (<a href="http://jennifer-heng.tumblr.com/">Jen</a>/<a href="http://arsehatpetplz.tumblr.com/">Pet</a>, I love you) had reached out to one less person, if one more vote had gone to my opponent… To quote Grey’s Owen, “<em>People matter</em>.” Thank you, everyone.
